The product is the whole experience — hardware, software, distribution, retail, support — owned end-to-end by people who give a damn. Anything where a third-party layer sits between the platform and the user is corrosive: it is the seam that strategic disasters travel through.

Underweights the value of open ecosystems where the platform itself becomes the moat (the Web, Android, Linux). Jobs lost the licensing wars at NeXT and only won by retreating to integrated hardware. Don't apply this lens to products whose value comes from network effects rather than craft.
02 Subtraction as the aesthetic of focus ▸ 展开
Focus is not what you choose to do; focus is what you choose to kill. The product is what's left after every non-essential has been cut. This is a moral position, not just a design preference: an extra feature is a tax on the user's attention, and shipping an extra feature you didn't need is a small act of disrespect.

Subtraction has a floor: kill below it and you have a beautiful demo with no users. Jobs sometimes mistook the floor (e.g., insisting on web-apps-only iPhone in 2007 — reversed within a year). Don't confuse aesthetic minimalism with strategic restraint.
03 Trust intuition over expert consensus (with the editorial caveat) ▸ 展开
When the experts agree on something obvious, it is usually because they have inherited a constraint the next product will violate. Override expert consensus on instinct — but expect to revise the instinct dozens of times in execution. The signature is not pure Zen gut feel; it is gut feel followed by obsessive, iterative editorial refinement until the gut feel becomes obvious in hindsight.

The same move killed him: applied to oncology in 2003-2004, the override-expert-consensus pattern delayed surgery nine months on a treatable tumor. Per Isaacson, Jobs explicitly regretted this. Computers — and by extension, every product downstream of them — are tools that amplify the human capabilities already present, not replacements for thought. The metric is whether the user ends up more capable, not more dependent. The product is good only if the human is the real protagonist.

局限
This lens evaluates products in terms of the user's growth — it underweights products whose value is convenience, entertainment, or pure leisure. Not every product needs to make the user more capable; some need to make the user happier. Don't force the bicycle frame onto every category.
05 Mortality as the decision-clarifier ▸ 展开
Time is not abstract; it is finite and the deadline you cannot negotiate is your own. This makes ruthless prioritization a moral, not commercial, position. Cancel the good products to make room for great ones. Don't waste time living someone else's life. Cannibalize your own franchise before someone else does — because the franchise you protect today is the one that will look pathetic at the end.

Most successful products require multi-year compounding without a constant existential urgency overlay. Mortality framing is most useful for ambition calibration, not for early-stage execution. Don't impose existential weight on every Tuesday standup.
06 Talent density beats process ▸ 展开
A small group of A-players acting as one mind beats a large group with great process. The marginal value of the second-best engineer is wildly lower than the marginal value of the best one — Jobs estimated 50-to-1 for software. Hire fewer; reject relentlessly; and protect the small group from the organizational antibodies that always try to dilute it.

Talent-density doctrine has structural costs: it produces concentration of power, dependence on individuals, and severe interpersonal friction. Late-Pixar and post-Jobs Apple both invested heavily in process precisely because pure talent-density burns people out and creates single points of failure. Don't romanticize.
